air

By Cheryl Marie Wade

a young woman or old seated in front of a mirror watches a lover's hands brushing her hair watches hands weave small tentative braids watches hands

they could be anyone's hands

all the hands that have held her harmed her

and as she watches the hands slide from hair to shoulders to breasts

she dreams

she is the hawk sky above Mojave pine, mist, green moon air in the bones of the hawk thin braid of air in the bones air

and hands
