All
SuperCrip Girl, SuperCrip Girl where are you We need your help to pull us through SuperCrip Girl, SuperCrip Girl
Patty
Hey, I'm SuperCrip Girl, now what's all the fuss I'm SuperCrip Girl, Yeah, Me you can trust
Jenny
Yeah, all right, SuperCrip Girl, now that your here We can relax, we got nothin' to fear
Patty
Hey, wait a minute, let me tell you true About what I can and I cannot do I may fly through the air like I haven't a care But if I'm doin' all the work that just ain't fair
Sascha
We want to help, honest we do But first let us know what it is you do
Patty
Well, if there's a car that blocks the wheelchair space You know that blue marked curb cut well, I get in their face Lifting up those cars with ease I drop 'em in a lot that charges great big fees It's a special place for those who don't care Silly to get me mad; I take it as a dare Like when I'm with a friend who's in a wheelchair and we try to ride the bus It really bugs me the way people make such a fuss "Your friend," I'm told, "Cannot ride with you. Buses are made for one wheelchair-user not two." That's when I get 400 of my friends To prove that this injustice must end
All
Yeah
Pandoura
SuperCrip Girl, we're with you But tell us now, what can we do
Patty
We'll block rush hour buses Until everyone discusses How this can be done How full access can be won
All
Yeah
Pandoura
We need to travel, too
Sascha
Everyone should know that's true
Patty
But everybody doesn't know That's why we're gonna do this show
Jenny
What I'd really like to do For all those who think we don't count, too Is take them to a land where they spend a day in our place
Sascha
Yeah, ride in a wheelchair Keep a smile on their face
Jan
They can try to do what we get done
Julie
Bet they figure out it ain't that much fun
Jenny
In fact, it can be a lot of work
Patty
So the last thing we need is people treatin' us like jerks!
All
Yeah!
Patty
So, hi there folks, we're here today to take you to a land where we work and play It's the land of differences, it's the land of same Where every single person has a beautiful name
Pandoura
My name is Pandoura, I walk with a cane These are just a few of the things I paint
Julie
Hi, I'm Julie, I'm in college now I study and study and study and how
Phoenix
Phoenix is my name, I love to be free My disability is hiding inside of me
Jenny
Hello, I'm Jenny, with my chair on wheels I'm gonna be a lawyer makin' deals
Jan
Hi, I'm Jan, I like to sing and play but I'd rather be in school teaching all day
Sascha
I am Sascha, I'm such a sassy girl I want to do everything in the whole wide world
Patty
I'm Patty but today I'm SuperCrip Girl I agree with Sascha Let's take on the world
All
Yeah
Pandoura
Come on now the ride is free
Jan
to this land where we can be
All
you and me
All
Yeah
Patty
Okay, okay now we've got these folks in Cripland And we're out on the street What should we tell them to do if we happen to meet?
Jan
if you see me going down the street want to say hi that's just great
Sascha
ask a question that's fine, too most of the time I'll be glad to answer
Jenny
sometimes I might say: I'd rather not talk about it
Pandoura
or maybe another time but I'll still be happy to say
All
hi
Jan
the next time we meet
Patty
Well, that's just fine as far as it goes But there must be more about us we want folks to know
Sascha
Jan, you be brave, be first up to bat If you go first, I'll go after that
Jan
The muscles in my arms and legs May not work as well as yours But I can do many things I can read you a story Or help you with your math If you turn the pages and hold the book close I'll play catch Or hold the rope while you jump You can help in other ways, too You can open the door while I go through Hand me an apple or cookie at snack time Or wash my bowl after lunch We can help each other
Patty
It makes me feel great to hear what you can do But sometimes we have hard feelings
Patty
We have to work through
Jenny
Sometimes a mirror seems to say You're not ok, you're not okay
Sascha
Mirror, mirror on the wall--
Pandoura
Oh no, not again.
Sascha
Who's the fairest of them all?
Pandoura
You know who.
Sascha
Who?
Pandoura
Okay. I'm going to tell you one more time. Now pay attention: She has creamy smooth skin; she has an oh so slim, absolutely perfect body; she has straight teeth, real pearly whites; she has a little button of a nose; she has a voice that's just as pure as a bell.
Sascha
That's not right.
Pandoura
So what? You didn't ask if it was right. I'm just a mirror. I have my limitations.
Sascha
But it's not right. I'm not like that. I feel bad when you say that.
Pandoura
Give me a break. I respond the only way I know how.
Sascha
But I hoped things would be different this time.
Patty
Hey, hey, what's going on here? When you look at yourself, you practically sneer I want you to give this a try: Mirror, Mirror does not lie. It depends on what you're looking for Beauty is in the eye of the beholder more
Jenny
That is so very very true I certainly see beauty when I look at you
Sascha
Me?
Jan
I love the different ways we shine Your beauty is yours, like mine is mine
Patty
Try looking at yourself again Maybe now you'll see a friend
Sascha
Yes! I think I'm beginning to see it! Everybody's different!
All
Yeah
Pandoura
Some of us are tall
Jan
Some of us are short
Sascha
With straight hair
Jan
Or curly
Jenny
Some people have brown eyes
Pandoura
Or blue or green or hazel eyes
Jenny
Our skin comes in different colors, too
Jenny
Bodies and body parts come in all kinds of sizes and shapes and they work in different ways
Jan
Being disabled means things are sometimes harder to do
Sascha
But then we can do things that someone else can't do
Pandoura
Some of us can walk and some of us use wheelchairs
Jenny
Or skateboards or roller skates or canes or bikes or walkers
Pandoura
Sometimes we're different in ways nobody can see
Pandoura
We don't need to be scared because we're different Being all the same would be boring
Sascha
Everybody's different. It's good to be different!
Patty
Well, now, you're all makin' sense I'm not the only one who gets intense Let's lighten up, C'mon have a heart Let's appreciate our body parts! Body parts, body parts, ooh body body body
All
Body parts, body parts, ooh body body body Body parts We've got body parts, wonderful body parts, fabulous body parts, really we do. Body parts, body parts, ooh body body body, body parts, body parts, ooh, body body body body parts.
Sascha
I got brown eyes, I got brown eyes, I got brown eyes, just like you.
Patty
I got blue eyes, I got blue eyes, I got blue eyes, Just like you
All
We've got body parts, wonderful body parts, fabulous body parts, just like you.
Jan
I got hands like starfish.
Patty
I got feet like moons.
Jenny
I got ears like little bitty roses in bloom
Pandoura
I got toes like oysters.
Jan
Elbows like spoons.
Sascha
I got A body that knows how to rock out a tune
All
We've got body parts, wonderful body parts, fabulous body parts, just like you. Body parts, body parts, ooh body body body, body parts, body parts, ooh body body body, BODY PARTS!
Patty
Hold on there, girls, sounds like we're talkin' bout ourselves as a pile of parts Shouldn't we, at least, include Our great big hearts Body parts are great, that everyone knows But we're more than our bodies, I hope that shows
Pandoura
We're ideas and spirit
Jenny
We're humor and pride
Jan
We have so much inside us, there's just no way to hide All that we are, and all we can be Like the special you you are There's a special me that's me: I am a disabled woman and that fact flows thru every facet of my life I am limited by my body I am not limited in my dreams I fly in my dreams even if you cannot see me and I will fly away unless you begin to see all of me! and I will fly away unless you begin to see all of me!
Patty
I fly in dreams and I fly on land But I want to remind you: I need a hand There's always so much work to do It seems like we might never get through
All
beepabeeep beepabeep beepabeep beepabeep NewsFlash!
Jenny
Hey everybody, how's it going out there? I'd like to talk to you about questions The first thing to know about questions is We all have them, about lots of things Everybody is curious The next thing to know is Having questions is really good I have questions about the air, the ocean, and What you are thinking Right Now I bet some of you have questions for me And I sure have some questions for you Like, How many of you have birthdays in May? How many of you like purple best? And how did you get here today? I came in my red van I call Maude I drove across the Bay Bridge. Now, we're going to play a Question Game I need a bold, curious kid with lots of questions Great, come on up here. (if no one comes-group member does) Hi, I'm Jenny. What's your name? Okay, the game goes like this: I ask you a question, and if you want to, you answer it. Then, it's your turn: You ask me a question, and I'll answer it if I want to. Some questions people don't like to answer, but others are okay. It's good to have questions, but, remember, people feel differently about answering them. Okay. My first question to you is: If you could spend a day doing anything you want to do, what would it be? (KID ANSWER) Okay, now it's your turn to ask me something. (KID ASKS, IF KID DOESN'T ASK ANYTHING, PANDOURA SAYS: I HAVE A QUESTION. QUESTION: (allow time for one q&a between kid & Jenny)
Patty
Hey, wait a minute, wait a minute, if you please Let's turn it all around; we can do this with ease Pretend that everyone is in a wheelchair, and being able to walk is different if you dare Jenny, ask some questions of our brave volunteer I bet we'll just love the fun answers we hear
Jenny
Hey, where are your wheels? If you're alone how do you reach things that are too high for you if you can't climb up? (TIME FOR KID TO TRY TO ANSWER)
Pandoura
What about using something like this. (REACHER)
Patty
Hold it now. I'm gonna have to stop this game And thank you very much, we're glad you came You've been a terrific volunteer You've showed us all you have no fear In this land of difference, in this land of same You really played a darn good game You've showed us all you have no fear In this land of difference, in this land of same You really played a darn good game
All
Yeah ( and those who can, applaud as kid takes seat.)
Patty
Our little show is almost through And there's so much more we'd like to tell you Because WRY CRIPS isn't just about fun We talk about stuff that can happen to anyone
Jenny
You never know about life or if you'll know someone who becomes disabled
Jan
Disability can affect anyone Sometimes people have little disabilities and don't even it know it themselves
Jenny
There may be a reason if things are harder for you And people can help
Sascha
Some people have a hard time reading It could be problems with their eyes or what is called a learning disability
Pandoura
There are many things we all do To make our lives easier If you tell someone you're having trouble That's the first step in getting the help you need
Jan
If there's one thing we'd really really like you to know It's that becoming disabled is not the end of the story
Patty
SuperCrip Girl would just like to say You've been a wonderful audience today But now we need to end the show Because all of us have got to go SuperCrip Girl has a lot to do And I know that I will never be through But if more of you would help me out Then we'd all have a reason to sing and shout
All
Yeah Clap hands Shimmy and shout Rock all your tired ideas right out
Jenny, Sascha and Pandoura
Like SuperCrip Girl and the WRY CRIPS Gang You can make your voice a voice for change Demand there be ramps wherever you go
Jan, Patty and Julie
Ask that interpreters be part of the show And remember perfume is a definite NO
All
Skip a rope what's that sound just a bunch of old ideas Hittin the ground
JK, SB and PC
Now so long from Patty, SuperCrip Girl She's so glad you gave our show a whirl
JL, PO and JM
And Pandoura, too, with her fabulous raps Watch as her hands make magical taps
All
Clap hands shimmy and shout Let's rock this whole darn world about
JL, PO and JM
Like Sascha, a girl who's new to our gang Bet your glad as we are that she came
JK, SB and PC
And then there's Jan, she's been with us awhile How can you not admire her style
All
Skip a rope stop on the ground Shake all your notions upside down
JL, PO and JM
Like Jenny our favorite lawyer to be Whatcha say Jenny, can you set us free
JK, SB and PC
And Julie, a student and a writer, too Why, there just ain't much this girl can't do
All
So clap hands shimmy and shout Rock this tired old world about
JK, SB and PC
Like ole Diane, who's not here today She's too sick to come out and play But she co-wrote this story, the whole darn show And we think that's somethin' you ought to know
JL, PO and JM
And Cheryl she wrote the story, too When you work together, there's so much you can do
All
So Clap hands shimmy and shout Rock this tired old world about Skip a rope stomp on the ground Rock this tired old world around Together Together Yeah! Together
